Learning Theme: Mentor for Maturity.
PARENT PITCH: Work on this 12 point program below with
your teen as time and opportunity allow.
Find ways to stay in good communication with your teen. As they grow, it will be harder and harder to
impose your ideas and principles on them.
So, let them see you sincerely trying to apply God’s ideals and
principles in your life.
1.
Impress on your teen the importance of our thought life.
MEMORY VERSE: “Finally, brothers, whatever is
true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is
lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent
or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Philippians 4:8.
MEMORY VERSE:
“Brothers, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your
thinking be adults.” 1 Corinthians 14:20.
2.
Teach your teen how much God cares about their inner person.
MEMORY VERSE: “Above
all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.” Proverbs 4:23.
MEMORY VERSE: “God sees
not as man sees, for man looks at the outward appearance, but the
Lord looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7 (NASB).
MEMORY VERSE: “As for
you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a whole
heart and a willing mind; for the Lord
searches all hearts, and understands every intent of
the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will
let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever.” 1 Chronicles 28:9 (NASB).
3. Character building
is crucial.
MEMORY VERSE: “Don’t
let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the
believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity.” 1
Timothy
4:12.
MEMORY VERSE: “[But] we
also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering
produces perseverance; perseverance,
character; and character, hope. And hope
does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by
the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.” Romans
5:3-5.
Prescription for
Productivity: “Make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to
goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control,
perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly
kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love.
For if you possess these qualities in increasing
measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 1:5-8
4.
Inspire your teen to desire wisdom.
MEMORY VERSE: “If any of you lacks
wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault,
and it will be given to him.” James
1:5.
MEMORY VERSE: “And he said to man,
‘The fear of the Lord—that is wisdom, and to shun evil is
understanding.’” Job
28:28.
MEMORY VERSE: “Who is wise and
understanding among you? Let him show it
by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom.” James 3:13.
5.
Teach your teen to support family.
MEMORY VERSE: “Children,
obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.” Ephesians 6:1
MEMORY VERSE: “He who
brings trouble on his family will inherit only wind, and the fool will be
servant to the wise.” Proverbs 11:29.
6.
Expect hard times in the future.
MEMORY VERSE: “Though
the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the
olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in
the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be
joyful in God my Savior.” Habakkuk
3:17-18.
MEMORY VERSE: “Consider
it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face
trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing
of your faith develops perseverance.
Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and
complete, not lacking anything.” James
1:2-4.
7.
Help your teen to understanding Satan’s strategies. He‘s a liar, looker & lurker.
MEMORY VERSE: “He was a
murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in
him. When he lies, he speaks his native
language, for he is a liar and the father of lies.” John 8:44.
MEMORY VERSE: “And no
wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising, then, if his servants
masquerade as servants of righteousness. Their end will be what their actions
deserve.” 2 Corinthians 11:14-15.
MEMORY VERSE: “Be
self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring
lion looking for someone to devour.
Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your
brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” 1 Peter 5:8-9.
8.
Make personal purity a priority.
MEMORY VERSE: “Create
in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” Psalm 51:10.
MEMORY VERSE: “To the pure, all things are
pure, but to those who are corrupted and do not believe, nothing is pure. In
fact, both their minds and consciences are corrupted.” Titus 1:15.
MEMORY VERSE: “Can a man scoop fire into his
lap without his clothes being burned?” Proverbs 6:27.
9.
Offer guidance for understanding and overcoming temptation.
MEMORY VERSE: “Pray that you will
not fall into temptation.” Luke
22:40.
MEMORY VERSE: “No temptation has
seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let
you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also
provide a way out so that you can stand up under it.”
1 Corinthians 10:13.
MEMORY VERSE: “Because he himself
suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.” Hebrews 2:18.
10.
Teach the centrality of love.
MEMORY VERSE: “Above all, love
each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” 1 Peter 4:8.
MEMORY VERSE: “And over all these
virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” Colossians 3:14.
MEMORY CHALLENGE: The Love
Chapter (1 Corinthians 13, translation of your choice).
11.
Inspire Christian Manhood.
MEMORY VERSE: “Be strong and courageous. Do not
be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he
will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy
31:6.
MEMORY VERSE: [Hezekiah charged the people of Jerusalem while under siege from Sennacherib]: “Be strong and courageous, do not fear or be dismayed because
of the king of Assyria nor because of all the horde that is with him; for the one with us is
greater than the one with him.”

12. Inspire Christian Womanhood.
MEMORY VERSE: “Charm is deceptive, and beauty
is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.” Proverbs 31:30 (see the full text
at Proverbs 31:10-31).
MEMORY VERSE: “For if you remain silent at this
time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will rise up from another place, but
you and your father’s family will perish.
And who knows but that you have come to royal position for such a time
as this.” Esther 4:14 (see
the full text at Esther 4:12-17).
PARENT POSTSCRIPT: This section stresses character
building. Therefore, revisit the Holy
Spirit theme (see “Age 5”) and make a more developed study of His
role. Compare the Holy Spirit’s divine
role with that of Satan (see point #7 above).
This could lead down many avenues of interest for your teen. In the end, all avenues should lead to a
greater awareness of the centrality of love.
If any single passage of Scripture merits
memorization, it is the great “Love:” chapter (1 Corinthians 13).
I hope you have not allowed other
activities to bump your regular family devotions (at least weekly).
