Learning Theme: The Power of Prayer.
PARENT PITCH: Pray together as a family.
Pray with your children personally.
Track God’s answers. Teach the
relationship between prayer and action!
It has been said, “Pray devoutly and hammer stoutly.” Don’t let your child grow up thinking that
prayer is a passive enterprise.
1. Teach your child the Lord’s Prayer.
BIBLICAL SOURCE: Matthew 6:9-13 (The Lord’s Prayer).
“This, then, is how you
should pray:
”‘Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom
come, your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily
bread. Forgive us our debts,
as we also
have forgiven our debtors.
And lead us not into
temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’
For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever, Amen.” Matthew 6:9-13.
2. Teach the A.C.T.S. model
for prayer (Adoration,
Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication):
a.
Adoration: Love
the Lord with all your heart, mind & strength in your
prayer life.
MEMORY VERSE: “I love
the LORD, for he heard my voice; he heard my cry for mercy. Because he turned his ear to me, I will call
on him as long as I live.” Psalm
116:1-2.
ADVANCED MEMORY CHALLENGE: “Now to him who is able to do
immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at
work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout
all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.” Ephesians
3:20-21).
b.
Confession; Acknowledge your sins, weaknesses
and need for God.
MEMORY VERSE: “ If we confess our sins, he is
faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all
unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:9.
MEMORY VERSE: “But the
tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but
beat his breast and said, ‘God, have mercy on me, a sinner.’” Luke 18:13.
c.
Thanksgiving: Give credit to God with gratitude
for your blessings.
MEMORY VERSE: “Give thanks
in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 2 Thessalonians 5:18.
MEMORY VERSE: “Devote yourselves to prayer,
being watchful and thankful.” Colossians
4:2.
d.
Supplication: Ask God for what you need and
desire.
MEMORY VERSE: “Let us
then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy
and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:16.
MEMORY VERSE: “Ask and
it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be
opened to you.” Matthew 7:7.
ADVANCED MEMORY VERSE:
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and
petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all
understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7.
PARENT POSTSCRIPT: You can recite the
Lord's Prayer before or after meals, at bedtime and so on. The book of Psalms is also a fine
resource. The Psalms are not about prayer,
they ARE prayers. Pray
them with your child. Also, teach your
child about the value of confession. At
appropriate times and places, show your child that you can confess your sins
too.
