Learning Theme: A
"Good" Body (the Church)
PARENT PITCH: You child will soon be a vital member of
our youth group. He or she will be
getting involved at church in more independent ways. Help them discover what body-part they
are in the church. Help them cultivate
spiritual gifts and employ them in life
1. The church is the
body of Christ.
MEMORY VERSE: “Just as
each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the
same function, so in Christ we who are many form one
body, and each member belongs to all the others.” Romans 12:4-5.
MEMORY VERSE: “The eye
cannot say to the hand, ‘I don’t need you!’
And the head cannot say to the feet, ‘I don’t need you!’” 1 Corinthians 12:21.
2. God gives good gifts to His church (the four primary
passages on spiritual gifts: Romans
12:2-8; 1 Corinthians 12-14; Ephesians 4:7-13; & 1
Peter 4:10-11).
MEMORY VERSE: “There
are different kinds of gifts but the same Spirit.” 1 Cor. 12:4.
MEMORY VERSE: “Each one
should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully
administering God’s grace in its various forms.” 1 Peter 4:10.
3 Teach the value of Christian unity (read John 17:20-23; Eph. 4:1-6 & Phil. 2:1-4).
MEMORY VERSE: “ How good and
pleasant it is when brothers live together in unity!” Psalm 133:1.
ADVANCED MEMORY CHALLENGE: “Therefore, as God’s chosen people,
holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with
compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever
grievances you may have against one another. Forgive as the Lord forgave
you. And over all these virtues put on
love, which binds them all together in perfect unity.” Colossians 3:12-14.
4.
Heroes of history inspire us to run our race well. Read the “faith” chapter (Hebrews 11). Study the heroes of faith since Bible times
too.
MEMORY VERSE: “Therefore, since we are
surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that
hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance
the race marked out for us.” Hebrews
12:1.
MEMORY VERSE: “Do you not know
that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.” 1 Corinthians 9:24.
5.
We’re on a mission from God.
Learn the Great Commission (see below) and explain how the church
keeps growing.
MEMORY VERSE: “But you will receive power when
the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem,
and in all Judea and Samaria,
and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8.
MEMORY VERSE: “All authority in heaven and on
earth has been given to me. Therefore go
and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and
of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have
commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:18-20 (The Great
Commission).
6.
Christians are called to worship God.
MEMORY VERSE: “God is Spirit, and his
worshippers must worship him in spirit and in truth.“ John 4:24.
MEMORY VERSE: “Ascribe to the Lord the glory
due his name. Bring an offering and come
before him; worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.” 1 Chronicles 16:29.
7. Be confident!
MEMORY VERSE: “Don’t let anyone look down on
you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in
life, in love, in
faith and in purity.”
1 Timothy 4:12.
MEMORY VERSE: “For I am convinced
that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor
the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all
creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ
Jesus our Lord.” Romans
8:38-39.
SUGGESTED SONG: “I’ve Got Confidence”
PARENT POSTSCRIPT: Tell your child who
your heroes are and why. Dale Gifford
once said, “By helping others, you are hero.”
Also, President Ronald Reagan said, “Those who say that we’re in a
time when there are no heroes, they just don’t know where to look.” (1981. First
Inaugural Address). Show your
child where to look.
