Learning Theme: Keeping
Covenants!
PARENT PITCH: The whole Bible
testifies to God’s graceful covenant (agreement) with us. He has called us into His family. In fact, all families require covenant commitments. Let your child see how real those commitments
are in your family. Teach the value of
family and of value of keeping agreements.
And help your child learn that faith is not just a system made of rules,
but a covenant relationship with our Creator.
1.
What’s a Covenant? (an agreement or alliance
between two parties).
MEMORY VERSE: “I will
walk among you and be your God, and you will be my
people.” Leviticus 26:12.
MEMORY VERSE: “Submit
yourselves, then, to God. Resist the
devil, and he will flee from you. Come
near to God and he will come near to you.”
James 4:7-8.
MEMORY VERSE: “This is
the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time,” declares
the LORD. “I will put my law in their
minds and write it on their hearts. I
will be their God, and they will be my people.” Jeremiah 31:33.
2 God’s Covenant with Noah.
MEMORY VERSE: “Whenever
the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting
covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.“ Genesis 9:16.
3.
God’s Covenant with Abraham.
MEMORY VERSE: “The LORD had said to Abram, “Leave your country, your people
and your father’s household and go to the land I will show you. ‘I will
make you into a
great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you
will be a blessing. I will bless those
who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all
peoples on earth will be blessed through you.’” Genesis 12:1-3.
4.
God’s Covenant with Moses.
MEMORY VERSE: “Oh that
their hearts would be inclined to fear me and keep all my commands always, so
that it might go well with them and their children forever.” Deuteronomy 5:29.
5.
The Marriage Covenant is sacred (God creates marriages).
MEMORY VERSE: “ ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and
mother and be united to his wife, and the two will
become one flesh’? So they are no
longer two, but one. Therefore what God has
joined together, let man not separate.” Matthew 19:5-6
MEMORY VERSE: “A wife
of noble character is her husband’s crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay
in his bones.” Proverbs 12:4.
MEMORY VERSE: “He who
loves his wife loves himself.” Ephesians
5:28.
MEMORY VERSE: “Marriage
should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge
the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.”
Hebrews 13:4-6.
6.
God Keeps His Promises.
MEMORY VERSE: “The Lord
is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient
with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.” 2 Peter 3:9.
MEMORY VERSE: “Be
faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the
crown of life.” Revelation
2:10.
MEMORY VERSE: “May God himself, the God of
peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body
be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. The one who calls you is faithful and he will
do it.” 1 Thessalonians 5:23-24.
7.
Keeping our end of the bargain.
MEMORY VS: “Do your
best to present yourself to God as one approved, a workman who does not need to
be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.” 2 Timothy 2:15.
MEMORY VS: “He has
showed you, O man, what is good. And
what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8.
PARENT POSTSCRIPT: Our culture is
increasingly hard on the family. At your
pace, help your child to see past what the culture is feeding him/her and to
see marriage through God’s eyes. And
make sure your child knows that our covenant with God is not just about what He
does for us, but also about what we do, in gratitude, for Him (a two-way
street).
